  • Dr. Wack P21S, the high-end line for wheels and tyres

What is Dr. Wack P21S? The high-end care line from Dr. O.K. Wack Chemie in Ingolstadt, built around the wheel, the tyre and bare metal. At its core sits the acid-free wheel cleaner with a colour change that visibly dissolves iron-rich brake dust. Alongside it: rim wax, tyre shine and metal polish as a matched system.

Dr. Wack P21S is Dr. Wack's high-end line for wheel and tyre care. It made its name through two acid-free wheel cleaners with a colour change: on iron-rich brake dust they turn from colourless to red-violet, showing you in real time exactly where the load sits. Acid-free means the formula is built for painted wheels and doesn't rely on aggressive acid. Around that core sit a rim wax, a tyre shine, a metal polish and a quick detailer, a matched system all from one house.

    • Two cleaning strengths instead of one compromise. P21S covers the everyday with the POWER GEL and the stubborn cases with the HIGH END. Both work acid-free and with a colour change, and the typical dwell window is 3 to 5 minutes on a cold wheel. Two tools for two levels of grime, not one do-it-all bottle for everything.
    • Four care steps from a single line. Clean, seal, shine, polish: P21S gives you a dedicated product for each of these steps, from the wheel cleaner through the rim wax to the tyre shine and the metal polish. That builds one continuous workflow instead of hunting down four products from four different brands.
    • Made in Germany since 1975. Dr. Wack produces the P21S formulas in Ingolstadt, with over 45 years of experience in vehicle care. The real value here is how predictable those stable formulas are: every bottle gives you the same result, so you don't have to re-dial the application every single time.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: We often see the wheel cleaner sprayed onto a hot wheel straight after a drive. That's the single most common mistake across this whole category: on a warm wheel the gel dries on before it can work, and the colour change comes out patchy. Let the wheel cool to hand-warm first, then spray it on generously from the bottom up, give the gel 3 to 5 minutes and rinse off with a strong jet of water. On polished or chromed wheels, test on a hidden spot first.

One line for the demanding wheel job

Dr. Wack P21S is the brand's answer to an area where the rest of the range deliberately stays solid: no-compromise wheel care. While A1 makes up the all-round car line and S100 the motorcycle line, P21S plays a level higher and is the only line the brand openly labels high end right there in the product name.

The reason is the substrate. Wheels are the hardest-worked painted surface on the car. Brake dust from hot iron particles practically burns itself into the surface, and road salt and tar pile on over winter. Work here with an all-purpose cleaner that's too mild and you'll be scrubbing forever; reach for acid that's too aggressive and you put the wheel's clear coat at risk. That's why P21S sticks firmly to acid-free formulas that dissolve iron chemically rather than raw acid power.

This positioning also explains why the line is so lean and focused. P21S isn't after 30 products for every niche, but a handful of tools that cover the wheel and metal job in full, from cleaning to sealing. That's exactly what makes it interesting for anyone who takes their wheels seriously and doesn't want to improvise from scratch every time.

At Detailing1, P21S is therefore the entry point we recommend when someone is looking to tackle baked-on brake dust for the first time and doesn't want to buy a bottle of acid on a hope and a prayer. The brand takes that decision off your hands by taking the risk out of the formula in the first place.

In the Detailing1 range we currently carry six active P21S products, from the two wheel cleaners through sealing and tyre care to the metal polish. That lets you map the complete wheel workflow without switching brands. Start with a single 750 ml bottle and you can always build the system upward later.

Acid-free, and the trick with the colour change

The technical heart of P21S is acid-free wheel chemistry with a visual working indicator. Instead of attacking the surface with acid, the cleaners dissolve the iron-rich brake dust chemically and turn red-violet as they do it.

That colour change isn't for show, it's a genuine working aid. The colour shift shows you in real time where the iron sits and how heavily the wheel is loaded. As long as fresh red keeps coming through, the chemistry is still working; once nothing more changes colour, the dissolvable brake dust is out and you can rinse. So you're not guessing at the dwell time, you read it straight off the wheel.

Acid-free is the second key promise here. The formula is built for painted wheels, meaning the clear-coated alloy and steel wheels that are the norm today. It doesn't attack the clear coat and goes on without any protective-glove drama, unlike the classic acid cleaners you used to handle only in full kit.

The honest limit is part of the truth too: polished aluminium and chromed surfaces are more delicate than painted wheels, because they lack that protective coat of paint. Here you should test the cleaner on a hidden spot before the first full go, leave it on for just 1 to 2 minutes instead of the full 3 to 5, and rinse thoroughly straight away. For the vast majority of painted factory wheels it's a non-issue; for the special cases it stays a deliberate move.

So in practice it's the type of wheel that decides your approach, not the product. Painted alloy and steel wheels get the full pass, delicate special finishes a shortened one. That keeps one and the same acid-free cleaner usable on almost any set of wheels, as long as you match the dwell time to the material.

POWER GEL and HIGH END as a pair of tools

At its core, the Dr. Wack P21S range is two wheel cleaners that don't replace each other but work together. The P21S POWER GEL wheel cleaner is the original and the workhorse for regular care, available from the 100 ml tester to the 5-litre canister.

The gel clings vertically to the wheel instead of running straight off, so it makes full use of the 3 to 5 minutes of dwell time. For the everyday driver washing their wheels every two to four weeks, the POWER GEL is usually all it takes. The 750 ml and 1000 ml bottles with a spray head cover the typical need most conveniently, there's 100 ml for a small sample, and the 5-litre canister for heavy users.

The P21S HIGH END wheel cleaner is the stronger step for the cases where the POWER GEL reaches its limit: deeply baked-in brake dust, long-neglected wheels, hard-driven cars with a heavy brake load. It triggers the same mechanism but works noticeably harder, and stays acid-free doing it.

Keep both cleaners on the shelf and you'll have the easiest time of it. The POWER GEL handles the routine; the HIGH END comes out when a set of wheels needs a real deep clean after winter or before the seasonal changeover. You'll find both together in the P21S wheel cleaner selection.

Clean, seal, shine, in that order

P21S treats wheel care as a chain, not a single step. The clean sequence is: thorough clean first, then seal, then treat the tyre, and polish metal parts separately.

Step one is handled by the wheel cleaner on a cold wheel, with 3 to 5 minutes of dwell time. Once the wheel is clean and dry, the P21S rim wax goes on top as a sealant. It lays a protective film on alloy and steel wheels that fresh brake dust clings to less well, so the next wash goes easier. The 400 ml tin is enough for several sets of wheels, and even one pass every few months saves you noticeable scrubbing over time.

The rim wax is the most underrated step in the line. Plenty of people clean their wheels flawlessly but skip the sealant, then wonder why the brake dust is stuck fast again after just two weeks. The sealant stretches exactly that interval: instead of having to scrub at full force, next time a mild 2-minute pass is often all it takes. That small bit of extra effort pays off over the weeks.

For the tyre, the P21S tyre shine brings dull, greyed rubber back to a deep black and cares for the sidewall at the same time. The order matters: always apply tyre dressing after cleaning the wheels, otherwise you'll rinse the freshly applied shine straight back off while cleaning. The 400 ml tin is enough for plenty of tyre sets, and you can dose the shine to taste, from subtly cared-for to wet-look.

The fourth step is covered by the P21S metal and alu polish. It isn't a wheel cleaner but a polish for bare metal parts like polished exhaust tips, trim strips or unpainted aluminium components, bringing them to a high shine. The 100 ml tube is small on purpose, because a polish is applied sparingly and buffed out, not sprayed over large areas. If you're out and about, freshen up between times with the P21S rim detailer, a heat-resistant quick detailer from the 500 ml spray bottle that lifts dust and fingerprints without a full wash.

That's how the products mesh: the cleaner lays the base, the wax makes it last longer, the tyre shine and the metal polish set the visual accents, and the detailer bridges the time between two full washes. Nobody has to run all five steps at every session. But once you know the system, you know exactly which product comes off the shelf for which occasion.

Where P21S sits in the market

Among the acid-free wheel cleaners with a colour change, Dr. Wack P21S clearly plays in the top league. The category is well stocked, from Sonax through Koch-Chemie to specialist detailing brands, and P21S counts as one of the classics that many people measure themselves against.

The strength of P21S is how predictable it is across the whole line. You don't just get a strong cleaner but a wheel system that hangs together, from a maker that has produced in Ingolstadt since 1975. That takes away the uncertainty over whether the sealant suits the cleaner or the tyre shine attacks the wheel, because it all comes from one house.

Where the line deliberately stops is no-compromise paint correction. P21S polishes metal and seals wheels, but it doesn't replace a system of cutting polishes in several grades, nor a multi-year ceramic coating. If you want to fully restore a wheel after a kerb strike or coat it in ceramic for the long haul, you add a specialist brand for that. For ongoing care up to protective sealing, though, P21S is complete.

That honesty is part of the recommendation. P21S doesn't promise anything it can't deliver, and that's exactly why it's a reliable standard for us, one we're happy to pass on to beginners and seasoned spanner-hands alike.

Your way into the P21S system

Anyone wanting to start with Dr. Wack P21S only needs two products to get going. The POWER GEL as the cleaner and the rim wax as the sealant together form the backbone that gets your wheels clean and keeps them clean for longer.

If you drive a lot, brake hard or have long-neglected wheels in front of you, add the HIGH END on top for the real problem cases. That three-way combo covers just about every wheel situation that comes up day-to-day, from a lightly dusty summer wheel to a baked-on winter set.

Want the tyre to keep up too? The tyre shine rounds out the set, and if you've got polished metal parts on the car, grab the metal and alu polish as well. That way you build up the complete wheel system step by step, without having to buy everything from the start.

For an overview of the whole brand there's the Dr. Wack brand world; if you want to move from the wheel to the rest of the car, the A1 car care range has the matching wash and interior products, and the S100 motorcycle care range the line for two wheels. That keeps your care within the same predictable brand universe, wherever on the car you're working.
